About the HDR stuff, that photo is not HDR. Its been heavily edited through photoshop elements. Its one layer, there are no major tricks. Start simply by making retouches and increasing saturation. Then, darken highlights and brighten shadows while slowly increasing contrast. Do this all incrementally to prevent overdoing it. Once you finish achieving the painting like HDR look, do simple retouches to maintain realizm. For example, I had to significantly darken the front tire after lightening shadows, which turned it gray. I also retouched his face to make it more visible and basically had to draw his left eye. Finally adjust color balance to your liking
